A NOTE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT

Andrew Feuling As we enjoy the pleasant weather and beautiful colors of fall, I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to each member of our school community and beyond as the winter season approaches. It has been inspiring to witness the collective efforts of our staff, students, and parents demonstrated throughout the academic year thus far. It is always striking to me the work that goes into assuring a bright future for our community, state, and country. It is as hard as it is fun, and it is as messy as it is brilliant. So many adults, both at school and at home, pushing toward that singular goal of giving each child that opportunity at success now, a year from now, and many years from now.

I want to send a special thank you to our parents, guardians, and community members that have been available to volunteer in our schools. I know that time is so hard to come by in our busy world, but every minute you spare for our children is meaningful. We never know exactly how many kids we will make a difference for or how indelible that mark will be, but every moment you are here supporting our schools is an opportunity to have it increased and strengthened.

There is much to celebrate in all of our schools every day, and we have had many successes to start this year. I see a horizon with many more to come. Thank you for your unwavering support of our children, schools and community, now and into the future.

NEW PROMOTIONAL VIDEO TO HELP FIND AND RETAIN EDUCATION TALENT

The Carson City School District has created a new promotional video to help find and retain talent to shape the future of education. Carson City is a thriving community for active lifestyles. We enjoy four seasons of weather. We’re only 15 minutes from Lake Tahoe, 25 minutes from Reno and 90 minutes from Sacramento.

The district is student-centered and extremely passionate about children. In Carson City, we provide opportunities for students to become good at learning and good at life. We also help them find belonging and purpose as they develop individual and collective problem-solving skills and allow them to create opportunities to improve society for themselves and others. CHS BAND DIRECTOR TO MARCH IN MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

Nick Jacques, Director of Bands at Carson High School, has been selected to join a marching band of more than 400 band directors from across the country in the historic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Nov. 23, 2023.

Following its inaugural appearance in the 2022 Rose Parade, the Saluting America’s Band Directors project is again bringing together band directors to New York City under the theme, “America’s band directors: We teach music. We teach life.” The march is designed to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators. Throughout their careers, the music educators in this band have collectively mentored and taught hundreds of thousands of students.

Band Shirt Jacques said the group will appear early in the parade’s procession following shortly after the large Snoopy Balloon and the Alabama A&M University Marking Maroon & White Band. The band will be directed by nationally acclaimed music educator and innovative band director Jon Waters. The sponsoring organization behind the Saluting America’s Band Directors project is the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation.

LT. CMDR. MEYER FINALIST FOR 2024 NEVADA TEACHER OF THE YEAR

The Carson City School District was pleased to announce Carson High School’s Lieutenant Commander Daniel Meyer, Retired, Senior Naval Science Instructor, was honored Sept. 19, as one of the three statewide finalists for the Nevada State Teacher of the Year, recognized by the Nevada Department of Education.

Lt. Cmdr. Meyer was surprised in his classroom filled with cadets shortly before the final school bell rang for the day. A representative with the Nevada Department of Education made the announcement via cell phone.

Lt. Cmdr. Meyer was among two other finalists in the state for the award including Laura Jeanne Penrod, a high school English teacher at Southwest Career and Technical Academy in Clark County School District, and Brianna Cotter, a high school Science teacher and instructional strategist at the Meadows School in Las Vegas. ‘HOME MEANS NEVADA’ RESONATES IN HEARTWARMING DISPLAY

In a heartwarming display of unity, talent and state pride, nearly 300 singers from seven schools in the Carson City School District came together to perform the cherished Nevada state song, ‘Home Means Nevada,’ by Bertha Raffetto. The event, held last week in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center in preparation for Friday’s observance of Nevada Day, resonated as a touching reminder of the state’s culture and shared values. The performance not only highlighted the students' musical prowess but also served as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving and cherishing the heritage that binds our communities together.

FREE ONLINE TUTORING SERVICE FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS

CHS Students In response to the growing need for accessible and affordable academic support, students in high school and middle school in Carson City now have access to "Paper," a cutting-edge online, unlimited tutoring service available 24/7.

Students can receive support in more than 200 subjects including mathematics, science, English and history to name a few. They may also submit written work for review and feedback, receive assistance in multiple languages and can ask questions in free 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. Students may access the program through Clever from the Chromebook Student Dashboard. In addition to tutoring, students will find games, learning tools and college/career readiness such as ACT practice.

For more information about Paper, please reach out to your student’s school. Be mindful this service is only offered to high school and middle school students in Carson City.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2023-2024 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Here is a quick reference to the 2023-2024 Academic School Calendar. This document details the start and end times of each school within the district, as well as minimum day dismissal and early release times for each school site. Please note those early release days for Professional Development will be on Wednesdays.

Take some time to plug in all those important school dates in your calendar. These include Early Release Days, Minimum Days, and Holidays. Also take time to note Winter and Spring Break dates as well as Parent Conferences and Graduation and Middle School Promotion dates. Additional links to school calendars can also be found here.

DIGITAL RESOURCES FOR PARENTS

On the district website, the Parent Dashboard contains several digital resource for parents and families. Find access to ParentSquare, Infinite Campus, Google Classroom and more. Please take some time to poke around the site to equip yourself with needed resources to help your student succeed.

WINTER COAT AND SWEATSHIRT DRIVE FOR CARSON CITY STUDENTS IN NEED

As the winter season approaches, Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program is in need of NEW youth coats (boys & girls – all sizes) and NEW teen/junior sweatshirts and jackets (all sizes). The community-driven initiative aims at ensuring all students have access to warm clothing during the cold months.

The drive will run through November 17, 2023. Donations may be dropped off at the McKinney-Vento Office, 618 West Musser Street, Carson City, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday (excluding Veteran’s Day). Donation receipts are available upon request.

In addition to physical donations, monetary contributions to purchase winter clothing are also welcomed. Gift card donations valued between $10-$100 to help assist pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade students in transition can be mailed to Carson City School District McKinney-Vento, 618 W. REMINDER: SCHOOL ZONES ARE 15 MPH

Nevada law prohibits people from driving faster than 15 miles per hour in a school zone, which are sections of streets or nearby streets adjacent to school property where students travel before and after school. Please be safe and patient, especially with our school crossing guards, and always be courteous with other drivers and pedestrians. Also note that drivers are not allowed to make a U-turn or to overtake and pass another vehicle in a school zone (as in the case where there are five lanes of traffic on Saliman Road near Carson High, Fremont Elementary and Seeliger Elementary).

NUTRITION PROGRAM UPDATES

The Carson City School District’s Nutrition Services is pleased to announce students eat free in schools again this year. For the 2023-2024 School Year, all enrolled students may receive a breakfast and a lunch meal on all school days. Want to know what's on the menu? Scan this QR Code.

BULLYING AND SAFETY TIP SYSTEM: SAFEVOICE

Carson City School District provides a 24/7/365 (24-hour, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-per-year) safety tool. SafeVoice is a live tip reporting system for school safety and student well-being offered in partnership by the Nevada Departments of Education, the Nevada Department of Public Safety and, more locally, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office to all K-12 schools, students, parents and community members in Nevada.

Students, parents and community members can report concerns about their friends or themselves by using the free SafeVoice app, calling 1-833-216-7233 (SAFE) or visiting safevoicenv.org. The reporting tool is easy to use, and when the person who reports an incident logs back in, he or she is able to dialogue with SafeVoice Communications Specialists who will determine if law enforcement is needed immediately to protect life safety. Reports are sent to the schools where administrators and counselors will respond with support, intervention and a safety plan for the child of concern. Similarly, any reports, where law enforcement are needed, will be sent directly to dispatchers in Carson City. Reporters may remain anonymous, and by law, all reports are confidential – they are never shared outside of the SafeVoice response system.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

According to NRS 392.040, except as otherwise provided by law, each parent, custodial parent, guardian or other person in the State of Nevada having control or charge of any child between the ages of 7 and 18 years shall send the child to a public school during all the time the public school is in session in the school district in which the child resides unless the child has graduated from high school.

Too many missed days of school, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused, can leave children falling behind in reading and math.

Struggling with getting your student to school? Here are some things you can do:

Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
Lay out clothes and backpacks the night before
Communicate the next day’s schedule in order to reduce anxiety

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If your child is communicating a desire to not attend school or attendance issues persist, consider seeking support from the school. Help make every day count. Regular school attendance has a significant impact on student academic success. Read more.

REQUIRED VACCINATIONS: MENINGOCOCCAL (MCV4) AND TDAP

All current 12th graders (seniors) attending any Nevada public, private or charter school for the 2023-2024 school year, must have a second dose of the MCV4 (meningococcal) vaccine and all 7th graders must have their first dose of MCV4 and Tdap. If you have not already, please make an appointment with your child's primary care physician. Additionally, many local pharmacies like CVS or Walgreens may offer vaccinations. HOW TO VOLUNTEER IN THE CLASSROOM

The online volunteer application portal for new and returning volunteers is available! We are now using Raptor as our volunteer management system. Raptor will simplify and standardize parent and volunteer engagement across the District. We encourage you to complete your application and get your approval as soon as possible, so you are ready to volunteer when an opportunity arises and we can easily communicate with you.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

Winter Driving We wanted to provide you with information that will be helpful in the event of school delays or closures caused by wintery, unhealthy or unsafe conditions. If you would like to read more about school emergency operations, Board Regulation 805 can be found on the District’s webpage at carsoncityschools.com within the “School Board” tab or by clicking here.

Should it be necessary to delay the start of a school day or cancel school due to severe or unsafe weather conditions, you will most likely hear about the decision from a ParentSquare message, the district website, district social media channels or through local news sources. As early as 6 a.m., a message about a school delay or closure will come in the form of an automated text and/or telephone call. This text or call from the District Office will provide you with the general details for the day. A banner on our home page will also display the essential information as early as 6:00 a.m. on a day when the weather is questionable. If you have not already, please FOLLOW and LIKE our social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Beginning as early as 5:15 a.m., watch or listen to your favorite local TV or Radio stations to get updates about changes to school schedules.

Extreme weather swings are possible in Carson City. Here are some terms that you will want to understand about school delays or closures.

Delayed Start – Schools will start two-hours later than usual. All Pre-K classes are canceled. Principals will adjust the school schedule for the shortened day. Educators and staff should arrive safely and as early as they are able, well before school is to begin on the shortened schedule. They should take caution and plan 2-times their normal travel time depending on driving conditions. The school day will typically end at the normal time. Breakfast will not be served.
Closure – Schools will be closed for the entire day. All employees, students and teachers (with the exception of Emergency Response Team members) should remain home. No student activities, school-work or programs will occur, including remote instruction. This includes school-course assignments, homework, afterschool programs and practices. No school services such as transportation, nutrition or student health will be provided. Please note that the Nevada Department of Education has given guidance that if a school is closed because of natural disaster, inclement weather, accident or any other extraordinary circumstance, the day/time cannot be shifted to a 100% distance or remote learning day and will need to be made up at the end of the school year.
Early Release – In the unlikely occurrence that conditions warrant early release from school, after-school programs, practices, performances and contests, including interscholastic athletic events will likely be cancelled.
Parent Discretion – If at any time you feel that conditions are unsafe to take or send your student to school, you may keep your child home for the day regardless of the District’s decision to hold school. The schools will support your decision and work with you to make-up any school work or assignments.

SLEEP AND HEALTH

Sleep and Health Adequate sleep contributes to a student’s overall health and well-being. Students should get the proper amount of sleep at night to help stay focused, improve concentration and improve academic performance.

Children and adolescents who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk for many health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, poor mental health and injuries. They are also more likely to have attention and behavior problems, which can contribute to poor academic performance in school.

How much sleep do students need? It depends on their age. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has made the following recommendations for children and adolescents:

Age Group	Recommended Hours of Sleep Per Day
6-12 years	9 to 12 hours per 24 hours
13-18 years	8-10 hours per 24 hours

Additionally, healthy students are better learners, and academic achievement bears a lifetime of benefits for health. However, youth risk behaviors, such as physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary behaviors, tobacco use, alcohol use and other drug use, which are consistently linked to poor grades and test scores and lower educational attainment.

DIAL 988 FOR 24/7 MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS CARE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

With the upcoming Thanksgiving and winter breaks approaching, it’s important to note students will be 1-2 weeks away from school, friends, supports, social workers and counselors. The Carson City School District is reminding families that there is help at the touch of their fingertips. Recently, the U.S. transitioned the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to 988, an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 mental health crisis care.

The move to the three-digit 988 phone number makes it easier to dial when emotions are running high. It also alleviates suicide-related calls to 911, redirecting the caller to a mental health professional who’s able to better assist them and their immediate needs. Read more.

HIGH-SPEED FIBER WIDE AREA NETWORK, ENHANCE EDUCATION

The Nevada Governor’s Office of Science, Innovation and Technology (OSIT), E-Rate Central and Fatbeam met at the Carson City School District to celebrate the establishment of a high-speed Fiber Wide Area Network (WAN) project, marking a new era of connectivity and technological advancement, which will significantly enhance the educational landscape for students and educators in Carson City.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, community leaders and school officials, showcased the district's unwavering commitment to fostering a dynamic and conducive learning environment. With the high-speed Fiber WAN implementation, the district aims to ensure students have access to modern, high-speed internet services, enabling them to explore a wealth of educational resources and opportunities online. CARSON CITY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION VIDEO FOR FUNDING FUTURE DREAMS

In the final month of the Carson City Schools FOUNDATION’s (CCSF) annual giving campaign “Funding Future Dreams,” the charitable organization created a promotional video to help raise funds for students and teachers. View the video here.

The Foundation continues to seek community contributions to support three proven programs: the teacher classroom mini-grant and department/school-site grants that help purchase special project materials; student book and material fees for students qualifying for the JumpStart College program and exam fees for Advanced Placement (AP) students in need. CARSON 5A BOYS CROSS COUNTRY NAMED ACADEMIC STATE CHAMPIONS

The Carson High School (CHS) Boys 5A Varsity Cross Country Team was named 2023 FALL season State Academic Team Champions by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in the Silver State. The team will be recognized at the NIAA State Cross Country Championships set for Saturday, Nov. 4, at Rancho San Rafael, in Reno.

Each season NIAA and Jostens, the NIAA's corporate partner, present a special award to the varsity sport teams with the highest grade point average (GPA) in each classification. The team GPA is determined by taking the individual GPA's of varsity team members from the previous semester and then computing an overall team average. Carson High’s Cross Country GPA team average was 3.73. Read More.

SENATORS CYCLING CAP UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Senators Cycling Mountain Bike Team caped their first undefeated season with a final win at the Nevada Interscholastic Cycling League Championship Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. Galena High School placed second and McQueen High School took third.

Fifteen teams and more than 300 athletes from Nevada and the Eastern Sierra competed in the event at Western Nevada College (WNC) in Carson City. The championships drew more than 800 riders and spectators and was hosted by WNC and Visit Carson City. Athletes raced on a high speed and technical course in Ash and Vicee canyons. Read More.

PRO TREATMENT FOR CARSON HIGH FOOTBALL FROM LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

Raders The Carson High School Football team received professional treatment in September while they were in Las Vegas for their game against Basic Academy. The Carson City gridiron athletes not only had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run drills and a full practice inside the Las Vegas Raiders’ state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, but they were also offered official Raider-branded memorabilia as tokens of their visit including hats and brand-new football cleats for some players whose shoes were torn up and worn-out. SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS FEATURED ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE

Each week (usually…as they align with Noon Rotary Club luncheons), Carson High School or Pioneer Academy school counselors will feature a “Senior in the Spotlight.” These spotlights highlight the interesting and amazing things each student is doing or has done, details specific challenges they may have dealt with as well as how they were able to overcame those trials.

The brief write-ups are not only featured on the district website, but they are also featured in local news media including CarsonNow.org and the Nevada Appeal. They are also featured on the district’s social media channels. Each Senior Spotlight student is later invited as a personal guest of Superintendent Andrew Feuling and introduced at that week’s Noon Rotary Club Meeting.

SIX SENIORS AMONG 72K EARN ACADEMIC HONORS FROM COLLEGE BOARD

Carson High School was proud to announce six seniors who were among 72 thousand students nationwide to earn academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. The recognitions were designed to help underrepresented students celebrate their hard work and create additional pathways to college.

The College Board has four recognition programs that award honors to students who met academic criteria and belonged to an underrepresented student group in the 2022-23 school year. The program celebrates the strong academic performance of rural area, Black, Indigenous and Latino students. CARSON HIGH UNDERGOES FACELIFT, RECEIVES NEW EXTERIOR PAINT

CHS Main Entrance You may or may not have noticed the complete facelift of Carson High’s exterior. The CHS Exterior Paint Project occurred during the summer. The cool blues and more modern gray hues better represent the school's brand and school colors.

MULTILINGUAL LEARNER EXPO FEATURED NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR

The Carson City School District hosted a free Multilingual Learner Expo this past September that featured special guest speaker, Ms. Juliana Urtubey, the 2021 National Teacher of the Year featured in People Magazine. Ms. Urtubey shared her efforts in advocating for a ‘Joyous and Just’ education for all. ROTARY CLUB OF CARSON CITY AWARDS $5K GRANT FOR LITERACY EXPOSURE

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carson City, was pleased to announce Brittany Witter- K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator - Humanities as the winner of a $5,000 Grant. The fund aimed to increase literacy exposure and foster a love of reading in students through historical fiction and non-fiction novel sets for grades 3-8 while supporting teachers with strategies to enhance the impact of the novels and literacy development.

DISTRICT EARNS AWARD, GRANT FOR EXCELLENCE IN RISK MANAGEMENT

The Carson City School District was recognized at the September 12 school board meeting for earning the prestigious Enterprise Risk Management Excellence Program Award (ERMEP) and for demonstrating excellence in enterprise risk management and commitment to the health, safety and welfare of its students, staff and the community it serves. The award came with a check in the amount of $8,787.50 to be used toward future risk management projects.

The ERMEP Award can only be achieved after a rigorous and comprehensive audit of an entity’s policy and procedures, which demonstrates adherence to industry best practice policies and procedures. The review was conducted through an independent audit by professional risk experts earlier this year in July. Read more.
